Agency history:

Patrick S. Gilmore (1829-1982), band master, impresario and composer, organized a series "of gigantic concerts that established his national reputation" beginning in New Orleans in 1864. (II, 224) His second concert in Boston MA in 1872, the World Peace Jubilee and International Music Festival of 1872 marked the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The performances featured a 2,000 member orchestra, a 20,000 voice chorus, "a grand organ, 100 Boston fireman in uniform pounding real anvils in the anvil Chorus from Verdi's Il Trovatore, electrically fired cannon, and as guest artists, two of the most popular composer-performers from Europe, Franz Abt and Johann Strauss" (I, 265) as well as appearances by the Band of the Grenadier Guards from England, the French Garde Republiciane band, the Prussian band of Kaiser Franz Grenadiers, and the U.S. Marine band. This collection includes a program from the week of Monday 17 June to Friday 21 June 1872 with a list music and performers for American Day (17 June), English Day (18 June), German Day (19 June), French Day (20 June) and Austrian Day (21 June); tickets for the tenor section of the chorus 17 and 27 June and undated; and tickets for the alto section of the chorus 26 June and 1-3 July.
