Provenance:

Purchased from Bruce Moses in 1992 and 1993.

Scope and Content:

Picture postcards depicting musical groups, primarily marching and concert bands, from a number of states (the majority in the Midwest) and several foreign countries. Groups represented are both adult and youth, male and female, amateur and professional. Some are shown marching, although most are posed and static.

Also included are postcards printed with song melodies and lyrics. The songs include patriotic songs, popular tunes, and humorous songs. Some include full melodies and lyrics, while some contain only portions of melodies or lyrics, or various combinations thereof.

Of particular interest are four photographs of performing groups from the House of David, Benton Harbor Michigan; four colored postcards of bands at Mooseheart, the Loyal Order of Moose school for children of deceased members, Mooseheart, Illinois; three photographs of the Fetlers Family Band of Riga, Latvia; highly gilded patriotic and devotional songs; and songs whose note names spell a word in the card's message.

Included also are scattered photographs of concert venues including the Hollywood Bowl; radio stations; solo performers; and seven songs and lyrics in German.

Location:

These postcards are now (July 2003) part of the Iconographic collection and cataloged individually in the Center’s InMagic catalog. They may be searched in-house in the CPM Reading Room.
