DeFord Bailey Jr.

A Nashville area musician, DeFord Bailey, Jr. is noted primarily as the son of the first black artist and first solo star of the Grand Ole Opry. Deford, Jr. visited the Center one day with David Morton, the biographer of his father. He talked with CPM staff and Bailey biographer Charles Wolfe, and listened to recordings of his father (CPM-PR-00098).

Three color photographs of a presentation given to DeFord Bailey, Jr. by Charles K. Wolfe and Center for Popular Music staff Paul Wells and Bruce Nemerov at the MTSU Alumni House on April 24, 1998 are also included. The occasion was the release of a CD, “The Legendary DeFord Bailey: Country Music's First Black Star” (TFS-122)  by the Tennessee Folklore Society. The photographs were taken by MTSU publicity staff.
