Paul F. Wells, who earned a masters degree in folklore from the University of California-Los Angles, was appointed director of the Center for Popular Music, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro TN, in 1985.
 

In this interview, conducted by Jacqueline Jones, radio producer for the University of Tennessee public radio station WUOT-FM, Knoxville TN, Wells discusses the history and founding of the Center; the definition of popular music; Center projects including a Civil War CD set produced for Time-Life Records and the International Encyclopedia of Popular Music; rock and roll music; and Grand Old Opry star DeFord Bailey.
